Cyphomandra Vitra, tamarillo in purple glass by patricia van lubeck

oil on canvas, 120 x 80 cm.

Cyphomandra Vitra

This vine was discovered by Quaker immigrants in Costa Rica in the 1950's and is a distant relative of the tomato. It lives high in the canopy of the Monteverde rainforest, with its roots embedded in the tree trunks.
The sticky fluid this plant secretes during fall is a powerful insect repellent which also benefits it's host.
